CSR charity partnership promoting cooking safety in third world

CSR support for development charity offering tech solutions to empower people out of poverty

Let there be light says ground-breaking development charity that is using pioneering technology and common sense to bring self-empowerment to developing communities.

Practical Action that celebrates the role of technology to bring sustainable development to the third world has been highlighting a number of innovations recently including its Score Stove.

The charity has also joined up with Bosch and Siemens Home Appliances Group (BSH) to battle poverty in a development context.

Practical Action has launched a smoke hoods digital tool that uses design and entrepeneurial input to create new bespoke solutions for ridding cooking smoke from basic stoves in the third world.

Such simple open stoves are used by millions of people in developing countries but create health risks.

The charity's website provides a tool to find sustainable smoke hood designs appropriate for the unique local conditions that are required, thereby reducing polluting solid fuel smoke.

The tool provides a technical brief for individuals or organisations intending to implement projects to reduce smoke air pollution, including entrepreneurs who are keen to start a local smoke hood business, and for those who want to make their own smoke hood, for instance.

Sam Shiroff, CSR Director at BSH, has backed the project and says: "Stimulating economic growth is one of the surest ways of reducing poverty in developing countries."
