Eric Clapton, Keith Richards just some of the legends performing in NY for musicians charity
An amazing benefit concert for the Jazz Foundation of America is set to raise the roof in New York City featuring a motley collection of musical legends…
A Rolling Stone and an ex-Yardbird are just some of the artists turning out for the unique charity event supporting musicians.
The Jazz Foundation charity concert on February 24 at Harlem’s Apollo Theatre, itself a non-profit organisation, is in memory of the late Hubert Sumlin. Sumlin’s distinctive and dramatic playing in Howling Wolf’s band was a hugely influential style which inspired many artists of the 1970s and beyond.
A definite blues legend he is name-checked by Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Robbie Robertson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix as a major inspiration, to name just a few...
Such is the reputation of this cult icon that Rolling Stone magazine listed the four time Grammy nominee Sumlin number 43 in The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Tragically Sumlin died in poverty though, a reminder that many jazz and blues musicians in America face hardship, especially in later life.
The benefit concert for the Jazz Foundation of America will feature Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Keith Richards, David Johansen, Willie Weeks, Steve Jordan, Dr John, Larry Taylor, Jimmie Vaughan, Jimmy Vivino, Jody Williams, Kim Wilson and many other names associated with jazz and blues as well as those simply inspired by the Howlin Wolf guitarist’s unique, dramatic trademark style.
The Jazz Foundation says a fund in honour of Sumlin will be created to prevent other musicians from facing similar circumstances…
Sumlin’s story also draws attention to the 6,000 musical emergency cases the Jazz Foundation deals with each year, helping jazz and blues musicians in the US.
The Jazz Foundation charity provides a range of services to jazz and blues musicians from medical care to housing to financial assistance as well as help setting up gigs… The Jazz Foundation has operated for twenty two years and came to special notice when it supported over 1,000 New Orleans musicians left homeless following Hurricane Katrina.
